25-29 APRIL: THE PUNCHESTOWN IRISH NATIONAL HUNT FESTIVAL
The Punchestown Irish National Hunt Festival is the highlight of the Irish sporting and social calendar. The special combination of thrilling sporting action, brilliant live entertainment, delicious food and drink, family fun, dazzling glamour or casual comfort is unequalled thanks to the unique Punchestown Festival atmosphere.
MAY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND: TRADATHY
Clancy’s and Athy’s very own FREE TRADTIONAL IRISH MUSIC FESTIVAL, offering 4 days of concerts and sessions in the longest running trad music venue in the country over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. Clancy’s is considered one of the great music pubs of eastern Ireland. Every Thursday night somewhere between 12 and 25 musicians now congregate there.
3rd JUNE: TRIATHY
TriAthy is Ireland’s Fastest Triathlon. The seventh event will take place on 3rd June 2017. Whether you are a die-hard athlete or a newby, TriAthy is a great event for those looking to improve their fitness. The course is on relatively flat landscape making it super-fast! Who knows, you might meet a celebrity competitor, last year Formula 1 driver Jenson Button competed in TriAthy!
JUNE: GORDON BENNETT VINTAGE RALLY
The Gordon Bennett Vintage Rally is a three day event held every year in early June. The event is open to cars manufactured before 31st December 1930. The rally starts from headquarters with a number of difficult routes for each class of cars. All cars meet at a central lunch area, usually a small town or village, that becomes engulfed with old cars, much to the delight of the locals.
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER: ELECTRIC PICNIC FESTIVAL
Electric Picnic has established itself as a truly unique Irish festival, set amid the rolling lawns of Stradbally Hall, Co. Laois, a beautiful 600 acre estate 20 mins from Dollardstown House. Great music, art, theatre, pantomime, food, comedy and holistic health… and a little bit of magic! “A magnificent rock ‘n’ roll circus, a textbook example of what a music festival should be.” Billboard.
19-221 SEPTEMBER: NATIONAL PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The National Ploughing Championships 2017 takes place one hour from Dollardstown House in Screggan, Tullamore. One of Europe’s largest outdoor exhibitions and agricultural trade shows, the championships attract on average 1100 exhibitors and 189,000 visitors. Showcasing Irish food, farming and culture this event incorporates all sectors of agriculture and rural living.
OCTOBER BANK HOLIDAY: ERNEST SHACKLETON AUTUMN SCHOOL
Sir Ernest Shackleton, the great polar explorer, was born at Kilkea House, near Athy, Co. Kildare. He is renowned for his courage, extraordinary leadership skills and contribution to geographical discovery during the era of Antarctic exploration in the early 20th Century. The Shackleton Autumn School was established to commemorate the explorer in the county of his birth.
